Chapter Twenty-Four
Alex
Alexâs head still pounded from the hit-and-run situation, but he washed down a few pain pills with some whiskey and decided that would have to suffice for the time being. He could slip to the doctors at lunch, but what good would that do other than stir questions? Besides, maybe karma had caught up with him and he just needed to endure this scenario.
He didnât have the money for some expensive ass prescription or tests theyâd send him for regardless. Evermoreâs healthcare had something to be desired, and Alex was already struggling to make rent this month. He might have to offer to do a run for Chuck, which didnât really thrill him considering the escalation of everything at the office. But you did what you had to do. Heâd learned that early on.
Lunchtime came around, and Scarlet had bought him a salad when Gretchen had come around taking orders. The new girl, Becky, looking like she already fit into the insane scheme of things, carried over their orders around noon. Even though the last thing Alex wanted was to eat, he told himself to play nice. He needed to get his shit together before things got worse.
Sitting at Scarletâs desk, she was in total work mode rambling about the new author and covers. Alex was making a mental list of the tasks Scarlet was delegating to him, but he was more focused on stirring the chicken salad around. He was zoned out, somewhere else, wondering if maybe a fresh start was in order. He was thankful for what Chuck had done for him but being constantly stuck in the loop of that awful night, of his guilt, and of owing Chuck couldnât be healthy. He needed to go somewhere new where no one knew him. He needed to be rid of all the people who remembered his ax-murderer of a motherâand he needed to be rid of the one person who knew his own sinister dealings. There was still a chance for him to be something else, he thought. Wasnât there?
He turned back into Scarlet to realize she was choking. She grabbed her neck, and he thought for a moment maybe she just swallowed something wrong. But then, the coughing turned to gasping and her face started turning funny colors. Flashes of his father on the floor drowning in blood, his face a sickly hue, flashed in his head, stunning him. Scarletâs face started to swell, and thatâs when Alex remembered.
Scarlet was horribly allergic to nuts. There must have been some in the salad. He sprang into action, grabbing the Epi pen from her top drawer and stabbing her thigh. He was all action and no panic. As easy as it was to take a life, it was just as easy to save one, he supposed. To play hero even when you were the villain.
He dialed 911 on her phone as she lay on the floor, and then he returned to her side to keep an eye on her breathing.
